It was the turn of recreational artists from across Southern Regional College’s recreational art and craft courses to take the spotlight. The exhibition’s opening night took place on Wednesday 12th June with artists descending on SRC’s Newry West campus to display a wide variety of artworks. On view was watercolours, pen & ink works, oils, acrylics, charcoal, graphite and textile pieces. Many pieces are available to sale to the public with the exhibition remaining open until Wednesday 19th June for viewing.

Many recreational artists are returning student artists. For Julie Kerr from Banbridge, this is her second year attending the recreational art course in Banbridge. For the exhibition Julie produced to acrylic paintings inspired by a holiday visit to Lisbellaw in County Fermanagh. Speaking on the recreational art course, Julie commented:

“I really enjoy the opportunity of enhancing my skillset and using new and different mediums. Its already a great place to enjoy and create new friendships.”

Other returning artists include Ken Barrett, also from Banbridge. Ken has been attending the recreational art course at SRC’s Banbridge campus for 6 years. Speaking on the art course, Ken commented:

“It’s great to connect with other artists and gain inspiration. It’s also a pleasant way to spend a Monday afternoon! Nigel our teacher is one of the key reasons why I enjoy this course so much. He is very talented and good at giving constructive criticism!”

For the exhibition Ken created two art pieces from oil pastels which titled “Man with Scarf” and “Still Life with Pumpkin”.

Newry resident exhibiting was Margaret Mullen. Margaret enjoys coming back to the recreational art course each year to meet new people and keep in touch with friends previously made. For the exhibition Margaret produced two acrylic paintings drawing inspiration from a plate gifted to her by her daughter and a Christmas card scene.

Rostrevor man Mortan Hale attends the Warrenpoint recreational art course. Mortan is a retired architect who enjoys attending the art course to develop and enhance his skills. For the exhibition Mortan created two acrylic art works based on photographs taken from 30 years ago, featuring cars Mortan used to rally drive.
