Overview

The Wet Trades Level 2 Diploma Traineeship is designed to provide individuals with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the wet trades industry. This traineeship offers a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in working with wet materials, such as plaster, cement, and concrete, to gain practical experience and develop essential skills in wet trade techniques, surface preparation, and finishing.

Learners will undertake training to learn skills such as: principles of building construction, information and communication; masonry cladding; building solid walling, isolated and attached piers; preparing and setting out masonry structures; construct cavity walling forming masonry structures; apply plastering materials to interiors; fix dry lining and plasterboards to interiors; laying sand and cement screeds; applying plastering materials to external backgrounds; preparing backgrounds and wall and floor tiling.

The Level 2 Diploma Traineeship in Wet Trades combines practical training with theoretical study to provide a comprehensive educational experience. Trainees will work under the guidance of experienced professionals in the wet trades industry, learning to prepare surfaces, mix and apply wet materials, and achieve different types of finishes. They will also develop skills in using wet trade tools, such as trowels, mixers, and finishing tools.

The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 traineeship framework.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English language or literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including Maths and English grades D-F or equivalent. For this course, the GCSE English requirement is Grade E and the GCSE Maths is Grade D. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert qualification should have attained a majority of higher-level subjects.
On enrolment the applicant will undertake an initial assessment which will confirm whether they should enter the full Traineeship or the Introductory Phase.
During the Pre-Entry Advice Sessions which may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft Teams), applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to the programme.
The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.

Assessment in the Level 2 Traineeship is based on a combination of practical skill tests, theoretical written assignments and end of unit Multiple choice tests. Trainees will demonstrate their competence through practical bricklaying exercises, construction projects and end of unit Synoptical test pieces. They will also be required to complete written assignments to assess their understanding of brickwork principles and techniques.

On successful completion of the traineeship, students will have gained the relevant qualifications to progress to a Level 3 Apprenticeship or a Level 3 Further Education programme at the College.

Upon successful completion of the Wet Trades Level 2 Diploma Traineeship, individuals will have acquired the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to pursue entry-level opportunities in the wet trades industry. Graduates may find employment opportunities with construction companies, subcontractors, or self-employment as wet trade technicians. They may work on a variety of construction projects, including residential, commercial, and industrial properties, where their skills in achieving high-quality finishes using wet materials will be in demand.
