Overview

This is a unit of study designed to support individuals working directly with children in a school setting. It will provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of elements of safeguarding children and young people’s welfare.

Applicants must be at least age 18.

This is a knowledge only unit; competency in practice is not assessed. Those individual's with experience within a school setting may find their experience beneficial when undertaking this unit.

This course is funded through the Skill Up programme. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements.

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date.
Applicants must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland.
Applicants must be ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.

Candidates are only permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time.

Areas of study:

Legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people
How to work in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children and young people
Why you need to ensure children and young people's safety and protection in the learning environment

This unit is internally assessed and externally quality assured through a portfolio of evidence.

Students will be assessed through the completion of a written assessment. Students will require access to a computer and Wi-Fi to complete coursework.

Students completing this unit may wish to progress to a higher level of study such as the Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning or other short courses within the suite of Childcare and Special Needs courses.

This course will enhance professional practice in an education setting. Individuals considering progressing to further study or careers as classroom assistants can start their learning journey by undertaking this course.
