Overview

The qualification provides vocational learning opportunities for learners to gain broad knowledge and skills in the travel and tourism industry. It allows learners to consider a career working in this sector with the potential to progress into the Travel and Tourism Level 3 Extended Diploma offered at SRC. This traineeship takes one year to complete.

Throughout the traineeship, participants will gain hands-on experience in simulated travel and tourism environments, working alongside experienced professionals. They will learn the fundamental skills required to provide exceptional customer service, effectively communicate with clients, plan travel itineraries, and promote tourism destinations. Participants will also develop an understanding of industry regulations, travel technology, and customer relationship management.

The course combines practical training with theoretical learning to provide a comprehensive educational experience. Learners will study topics such as travel and tourism operations, customer service excellence, destination knowledge, marketing and promotion, and travel technology.

The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 traineeship framework.

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.

All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English Language or literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.

Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including Maths and English grades D-F or equivalent. Enhanced entry grades for maths and English apply in certain subject areas. These will be discussed with applicants following receipt of their application.

Applicants presenting with a Junior Certificate at higher level must have achieved 4 grades A-C to facilitate entry to level 2 courses. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cycle must have achieved 4 merits or above to facilitate entry to level 2 courses.

On enrolment the applicant will undertake an initial assessment which will confirm whether they should enter the full Traineeship or the Introductory Phase.

During the Pre-Entry Advice Sessions which may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams) , applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to the programme.

The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.

Please note that entrance requirements may be increased in some vocational areas.

Marketing and digital media for travel and tourism
Exploring your own country as a holiday destination
Exploring global holiday destinations

Assessment in the traineeship is based on a combination of practical tests and exams. Participants will be assessed on their ability to apply their skills and knowledge in a practical setting, such as customer interactions, itinerary planning, or utilising travel technology. They may also be required to demonstrate their understanding of travel and tourism principles, industry regulations, or marketing strategies.

On successful completion of this course, students may progress to the Travel and Tourism Level 3 Extended Diploma offered at SRC.

Upon successful completion of the Travel and Tourism Level 2 Diploma Traineeship, participants will have acquired the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to pursue an entry level role in the travel and tourism industry. Students may find employment opportunities in various sectors which include:

Travel agencies
Tour operators
Airlines
Hotels
Visitor information centres.
Students may also work in roles such as travel consultants, customer service representatives, tourism coordinators, or reservations agents.
