Overview

This course is suitable for learners aged 16+ who are working or volunteering within a school or college, particularly in the role of Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. This course is aimed at those who work with children and young people aged 5 years and up.

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, communication, and professional relationships.

This qualification aims to:

focus on the study of supporting teaching and learning.
offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge.
provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to:

provide learners with knowledge and skills needed to work in a school or college environment.
provide a stepping stone into further learning within the sector.

To achieve this qualification learners are required to successfully complete 11 mandatory units. As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working or be on a practical placement during the duration of the taught programme of study, in a learning environment (school or college). This is a competency-based qualification; CACHE recommends a minimum of 100 hours of placement in a real work environment.

Applicants should:

Be working in support roles within a school or college.
Be aged 16 or above at the point of entry.
Hold the following:
a) 15 points or greater, consisting of at least 4 GCSE at Grade C, or equivalent qualification profile from the Register of Regulated Qualifications. In certain circumstances the College may reduce this requirement if it is deemed that the candidate has demonstrated the commitment, understanding and knowledge of the subject; OR
b) BTEC Level 2 First Diploma or equivalent at Pass or above with an overall profile equating to 15 points; OR
c) NVQ Level 2 (in relevant subject area); OR
d) Leaving Certificate – a profile equivalent to 12 points (of which 3 subjects must be achieved at Grade C3 or better at Ordinary Level) pre-2017. From 2017 onwards, 3 subjects must be achieved at 04 or better at Ordinary Level.

Please note you cannot complete this course unless you have a relevant placement/employment in a suitable setting and have a valid Access NI Check.

Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
Understand how children and young people develop
Support positive behaviour in children and young people
Support children and young people during learning activities
Support English and maths skills
Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
Support assessment for learning
Engage in personal and professional development

All students' work is internally assessed and externally quality assured through a portfolio of evidence.

The assessment consists of one component: an internally assessed portfolio of evidence which is assessed by centre staff and externally quality assured by NCFE. Learners must be successful in this component to gain the qualification. Learners who aren’t successful can resubmit work within the registration period, however, a charge may apply. All the evidence generated by the learner will be assessed against the standards expected of a level 3 learner for each learning outcome.

Further professional development courses are available within the College to supplement your knowledge and skills for working with children and young people. Successful learners may also be eligible to apply for higher education qualifications.

Following successful completion, learners can seek employment within classroom assistant roles.
