Overview

This course is suitable for learners aged 16+ who are working or volunteering within a school or college, particularly in the role of Teaching Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. This course is aimed at those who work with children and young people aged 5 years and up.

This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, communication, and professional relationships.

This qualification aims to:

  • focus on the study of supporting teaching and learning.
  • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge.
  • provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

The objectives of this qualification are to:

  • provide learners with knowledge and skills needed to work in a school or college environment.
  • provide a stepping stone into further learning within the sector.

To achieve this qualification learners are required to successfully complete 11 mandatory units. As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working or be on a practical placement during the duration of the taught programme of study, in a learning environment (school or college). This is a competency-based qualification; CACHE recommends a minimum of 100 hours of placement in a real work environment.
