Overview

This unit is suitable for individuals working as a classroom assistant with children aged 4 -18 years old who have special educational needs. This individual unit belongs to a suite of units included in the Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning. This unit will run for 6 weeks, 5 hours per week and is designed for individuals who wish to deepen their understanding and skills in supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and disabilities. Participants will learn effective strategies and approaches to facilitate inclusive learning environments that cater to diverse needs.

This course is ideal for teaching assistants, support staff, and anyone interested in enhancing their skills to support children and young people with SEN and disabilities in educational settings.

Applicants must be in an employed or volunteer role or on placement in a classroom setting with children with special educational/additional needs.

Topics include:

Understand the principles of inclusive practice and the rights of disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs
Understand how to obtain information about individual needs, capabilities and interests of disabled children and young people, and those with special educational needs
Understand the special educational needs of children and young people with cognition and learning needs
Understand the special educational needs of children and young people with emotional, behavioural and social development needs
Understand the special educational needs of learners with sensory and/or physical needs
Understand the kinds of strategies needed to support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities

Assessment will be conducted through written assignment, reflections, and observations of practice.

This unit allows progression to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning or the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning. There is also an array of short professional development programmes available.
