Overview

The Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) Level 3 Unit is designed for individuals aiming to advance their knowledge and skills in the programming, application, and troubleshooting of PLC systems. As a cornerstone of modern automation in manufacturing and industrial processes, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of PLC operation, enabling participants to design and implement effective control solutions.

This unit will give participants an understanding of the use and application of programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), the hardware and software that makes up a PLC and the interaction needed between both components.

An understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) use would be beneficial before undertaking this course

This course is funded through the Skill Up programme. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements.

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date.
Applicants must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland.
Applicants must be ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.

Candidates are only permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time.

Modules include:

Investigate the technology used in industrial Programmable Logic Controller systems
Develop an industrial Programmable Logic Controller system to solve an engineering problem

Assessment will be through observation of practical tasks and coursework.

Upon completing the Programmable Logic Controllers Level 3 Unit, participants may pursue further studies in Advanced PLC programming and automation courses, specialisations in industrial automation, robotics, or control systems or further and higher study in engineering or mechatronics.

This unit opens up a variety of career paths in the field of industrial automation, including PLC Programmer, Automation Technician, Control Systems Engineer, Maintenance Engineer or Industrial Electrician.
