Overview

The Traineeship in Hairdressing provides a high quality vocational education and training programme at level 2 and is primarily aimed at school leavers who aspire to work within the hairdressing sector. It is designed to provide individuals with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required for a career in the hairdressing industry. This traineeship offers a valuable opportunity for aspiring hairdressers to gain hands-on experience, develop essential skills, and explore the diverse aspects of hairdressing and salon services.

Students will benefit from practicing and performing services on paying clients in a real working environment. The programme places a strong emphasis on practical experience and work-based learning. Trainees will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world salon settings. Under the guidance of experienced hairdressers, they will practice their skills on clients, develop their communication and consultation abilities, and learn to deliver high-quality salon services.

Please note that hairdressing related science is a key component of this course.

The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 traineeship framework.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English language or literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including Maths and English grades D-F or equivalent. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cert qualification should have attained a majority of higher-level subjects. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cycle must have achieved 4 merits or above to facilitate entry to level 2 courses. Enhanced entry grades for maths and English apply in certain subject areas. These will be discussed with applicants following receipt of their application.
On enrolment the applicant will undertake an initial assessment which will confirm whether they should enter the full Traineeship or the Introductory Phase.
During the Pre-Entry Advice Sessions which may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft Teams), applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to the programme.
The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.

Please note that entrance requirements may be increased in some vocational areas.

A compulsory work based learning element- students will be required to complete 60 hrs in a work placement over a two week period

Applicants will be assessed through a combination of coursework, portfolio of evidence, e-assessment & practical assessment.

Students will be required to purchase their own hairdressing kit, dolly heads and uniform.

Successful students can progress to study the Level 3 Diploma in hairdressing or other relevant level 3 courses.

The Hairdressing Level 2 Traineeship provides a solid foundation for individuals seeking to pursue a career in the hairdressing industry. Upon completion, trainees will have acquired the foundational knowledge, practical skills, and professional values necessary to work effectively in a salon environment and provide excellent service to clients.
