Overview

The Domestic & Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Installation Level 3 Award is designed for individuals seeking to gain essential skills and knowledge in the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. With the increasing adoption of electric vehicles, this course prepares participants to meet the growing demand for qualified professionals in the EV installation sector.

As the shift towards electric mobility accelerates, the need for skilled technicians who can install and maintain EV charging systems is paramount. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles of electric vehicle installation, focusing on both domestic and small commercial applications. Participants will learn to navigate regulatory requirements, understand installation techniques, and ensure safe and efficient charging solutions.

This course is intended for practical electricians. Eligibility for this qualification must be confirmed according to the learner entry requirements as outlined below.

Learners must hold the following:

City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment) (2357)
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance) (2357)
City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification (5357)
City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced worker qualification (2356)
City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced worker qualification (2347)
Other awarding organisations equivalences will also be acceptable.

For all learners the qualifications above must have been achieved no more than 5 years prior to starting this qualification or there must be evidence the learner has remained current by holding the latest edition of the wiring regulations qualification.

This course is funded through the Skill Up programme. All applicants must meet the following entry requirements.

Applicants must be 18 years of age on or before the course start date.
Applicants must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland.
Applicants must be ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.

Candidates are only permitted to complete a maximum of two free courses at a time.

Students will study areas including:

Understanding the fundamentals of electric vehicles, including types, components, and the benefits of EV adoption
Charging equipment and technology
Installation practices including site assessment, positioning, and the use of appropriate tools and techniques
Electrical safety standards
Testing and commissioning EV charging installations

Means of assessment will include practical assessment, written assignments and active engagement in class discussions and practical exercises.

Students will be required to purchase the Electric Vehicle Charging Installations 5th Edition book priced at £80.

Upon completing the Domestic & Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Installation Level 3 Award, participants may pursue further studies in advanced electrical installation courses, specialisations in renewable energy technologies or smart grid systems or continued professional development in the field of electric vehicle technology.

This award opens up a variety of career paths in the growing electric vehicle market, including Electric Vehicle Charging Installer, Electrical Technician specialising in EV installations, Renewable Energy Technician, Field Service Engineer for EV charging equipment or Technical Sales Representative for EV solutions.
